Most of my watercolor maps are inspired by islands and contrasts primarily in the ecological sense, but some of them feature geology more prominently, especially when the islands are volcanic cones rising out of cities. This video gives a taste of a map I finished recently, capturing my experience of one of these volcanoes and its urban context.
Monte Nuovo is part of a volcanic system, sometimes considered a supervolcano, that’s been causing some concern lately for the greater Naples area. I should add that Mt. Vesuvius, which'll erupt again too someday, is actually part of a different system on the other side of the city.
More to come on this map and place later on! Next time though, I’ll back up a bit to say more about the different kinds of islands, volcanic and otherwise, that these maps are about and why I think I’m so entranced by them. (Maybe the reasons sound a little familiar?)
